One of the nation’s top classic car events celebrates its silver anniversary this weekend, as the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance honors racer Roger Penske. Roger Penske’s racing teams won the IndyCar and Australian touring car championships last year on top of more than a half century of him being a winning team owner and racing driver. Now Penske, aka “The Captain,” arrives at this weekend’s 25th annual Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance as its honoree, with displays of race cars he’s driven or led to victory on The Golf Club of Amelia Island’s 10th and 18th fairways. More than 60 years ago, a young Virgil Exner Jr. not only followed in his father’s footsteps by designing his own sports car, he also went ahead and built it himself with little more incentive than to see his design become reality. Rivals teams unite, threaten legal action over Ferrari/FIA settlementRacer
The seven teams that do not use Ferrari power units are threatening legal action in response to the FIA’s settlement with the Italian manufacturer. The FIA announced Feb. 28 that it had concluded its analysis of the way Ferrari operated its power unit and reached a settlement with the team, adding that “the specifics of the agreement will remain between the parties.” The statement has angered Mercedes, Red Bull, McLaren, Renault, Racing Point, AlphaTauri and Williams, and the seven released identical statements on Wednesday morning signaling their displeasure. At last year’s Geneva Motor Show, Koenigsegg revealed its latest hypercar, the 1280-1600 horsepower Jesko. Named after Christian’s father, this all-carbon, twin-turbo V-8 tour de force’s set run of 125 units sold out within a few days, with Koenigsegg also promising a low-drag alternative for 2020. Following the canceled 2020 show, Jesko customers can now choose whether they want the track-focused, big-winged Jesko shown in 2019 or the new straight-line rocket Jesko Absolut. With no cars built yet apart from the prototypes, the final production ratio between the two models will be all up to demand.

A 1965 Porsche 356 cabriolet sold for $198,750 to top McCormick’s annual February auction in Palm Springs, California. Overall, the auction sent 287 of 501 collector cars home with new owners for a total of $4,616,000. Among other noteworthy sales, McCormick’s said, was a 1937 Packard 115C roadster that sold for $54,060 and a 1949 REO Speedwagon that went for $36,835. READ MORE

Williams boss Claire Williams has said that Formula One must be “incredibly responsible and enormously responsive” about the coronavirus outbreak as it attempts to start the 2020 season on schedule. F1’s first three races are “flyaways” to Australia, Bahrain and Vietnam. The fourth race, the Chinese Grand Prix, has been postponed from its original date (April 19) due to the flu-like virus.
